1. Setting up Synchronet

[Note:]  While this tutorial gives example for joining Net 229 the basic precepts
work for joining any FidoNet Net. Here in Net 229, we will help any node join 
FidoNet by using the procedure below. We will ensure that you have everything 
working and then forward your supplied info to a Net reasonably close to where 
you live.  If there is no Net close to you, we will gladly welcome you to our Net. 
This also holds true if you get no response within a reasonable time period after we 
have forwarded your info. This ensures that you get good "customer service!" <g>


Most of this tutorial is geared towards Synchronet for Win32.  Where appropriate,
*nix instructions will be noted.

For example, Argus/Radius do not have equivalent *nix versions.  However, you can
use BinkD or Internet Rex.  [One caveat:  the current version of InternerRex does not work
on newer Linux 2.6.x kernels.]

1.1 Get a Temporary Node Number and Download the Examples

First, you will need to send an E-Mail to the Net 229 Webmaster 
and request your temporary node number, password and your 
assigned Hub system.

In order to make the job of setting up Synchronet a little easier, feel 
free to download the setup-argus.zip (1,122,970 bytes) file. 
If you prefer to use Radius, which is based on Argus, but is actively being developed, 
please download setup-radius.zip (921,950 bytes) file.

In this file, you will find  the Argus mailer program or the new Radius program 
depending on which you downloaded, fidonet.na echolist, sbbsecho.cfg for the 
CTRL directory, and copies of pkzip/pkunzip in case you don't have them.

You will also need a copy of the most recent nodelist.  Please put it
your \sbbs\nodelist\ directory.

1.2 Unpacking the Programs

When unzipping the examples be sure to extract to your SBBS directory.  
Note that the Archive is set to extract the files to \SBBS\  If you 
extract to C:\ and your BBS is in C:\SBBS\ then all the files will 
extract to the appropriate areas for this documentation.  If you have 
your BBS setup in another drive change to that drive and extract setup.zip 
into the root (i.e.; D:\).  If you have SBBSsetup into a different directory 
than SBBS, you can extract into a temp directory, then copy the sub-directories 
created (ARGUS, EXEC, NODELIST) to your SBBS directory.  Make sure that you use 
the -d switch if you are using pkunzip.  If you are using WinZip or equivalent 
Win32 application, make sure it maintains directories.

1.3 Setting up Network Configuration

First we need to setup you node configuration in SCFG -> Networks -> 
FidoNet Echomail and Netmail.  You will have a screen that looks basically 
like the one below (Figure 2.)

While we are just first setting up for the first time, the System Addresses will contain the
temporary node number assigned by the NC in his E-Mail to you.  You will be given a 
final address when you have successfully sent a Netmail to the Hub assigned 
by the NC.

This proves that your setup is working and that you are ready to go.
Default Outbound Address can be left at No
The important things to note will be the paths and NetMail and EchoMail
Semaphores.  The paths and names of the NetMail and EchoMail Semaphore 
files are important.  The only thing you need to change is the root directory
of SBBS. (The default being C:\SBBS\)
Using C:\SBBS\ as the root then:
NetMail Semaphore: %jfidoout.now
EchoMail Semaphore: %jfidoout.now
Important: Do not change this!
The names of the files themselves are important as you will see later.
The rest of the settings can be left as they are in Figure 2.

1.4 Setting up the Message Bases

First, we need to set up a Message Area.  You may choose to set all the message
areas you want under one message group such as FIDO.  In the example below, 
(Figure 3.) you will see that sorting isn't complete on this system :)

By pressing the INSert key you can add a Message Group such as FidoNet. 
You can then open the FidoNet Group.  (See Figure 4.)

One of the easiest ways to import the Message Areas is to use the Import Areas
command.  Fair warning on using this method: There are a lot of FidoNet Message Areas!
Select the command to Import Areas....  Then choose FIDONET.NA (See Figure 5.)

In the next box after Hitting enter of FIDONET.NA (Fido) type in the 
full path and name of the FIDONET.NA file.  If you are using the default paths
and uncompressed the setup.zip into the default directories, it will be:
C:\SBBS\NODELIST\FIDONET.NA
(Remember to insert the correct drive and path for your system.)
After a short time, depending on what kind of system you are running, all the
message areas will be imported.  


If you are joining Net 229 there are four FidoNet Areas that need to be added 
to your system manually:


NET229
NET229_GENERAL
REG12
REG12_USER

If you are not joining Net 229, then configure the following echo manually while
we help test your setup prior to getting your node number.

HUB2000

Under Message Sub-boards press the INSert key and add each one using the
defaults.

Now go to Message Sub-board and hit enter.  Hit enter on the first message
sub-board.  Move down to Toggle Options and hit enter.  Toggle the options
on your system the same as Figure 6.
While you are here and have Imported your Areas, you can now Export them to: 
AREAS.BBS (SBBSECHO).  It will ask you for your Uplinks.  Enter the uplink 
address you were assigned here. You can use the default PATH/FILENAME given.

Hit Escape and go down to Network Options and hit enter.  Set your system
up like Figure 7. using the assigned temporary address given to you in place of 1:229/2099 shown.

Do not worry about the FidoNet Address as it will change when you
change your Main Address when you get your Node Number.  Right now it will
read 1:229/1099, 1:229/2099, or 1:229/3099 depending on the number assigned by the NC.

1.5 Setting up the NetMail and EchoMail Events

[ Note:  This step is no longer necessary with v3.12a and later as the
default Semaphore files are used.  In previous versions these events had 
to be manually setup.  The instructions are left here for any sysops using 
older versions -- although everyone should be using the newer version :) ]

If you recall we setup the NetMail and EchoMail Semaphore files in the
Main FidoNet configuration to be NEWMAIL.NOW.
Here is where we set up the events that these files trigger.  A feature that
Synchronet has is the ability to trigger an event with a file with the event
name plus the .NOW extension created in the C:\SBBS\DATA\ directory.
In SCFG32, go to External Programs -> Timed Events.  You will be at a 
screen that looks somewhat like Figure 8 below.

In this Figure, you can see the event, NEWMAIL has already been 
created.  You will have to use the INSert key to add it in your setup.  
Create the event as in Figure 9.
